Travel & Stay
Getting around is pretty easy in Gent (by foot, bike, bus, and train). Here are some tips to make your stay a bit more convenient.
Accomodation
We recommend staying near the ceremony venue (Sint-Pieters Abdij) or the reception venue (The Heilig Hartkerk). There are hotels, B&Bs, and Airbnb's to rent.
By foot, train, and bike.
There are two train stations in Gent: Gent Sint-Pieters and Gent-Dampoort.
The Gent-Sint Pieters station is walking distance from the ceremony venue.
The Dampoort station is walking distance to the neighborhood where we live and where the reception will be.

There is bike parking at both venues.
Getting around by car & taxi
Gent is not a car-friendly city.
However, there is a city parking lot at the ceremony venue that can be used.
There is limited parking at the Heilig Hartkerk (reception venue), street parking is advised but you must buy a ticket. Also, the inner city of Gent is a low-emission zone, so before coming check that your car can enter.

Taxis are available at the train stations and via Taxi4You.
Activities
Some fun things to do while in town...
  • See the city from the river! We recommend these kayaks: https://en.kajakskorenlei.be/. Watch out for the river boat traffic, it can be pretty busy!
  • A must-see painting by the van Eyck brothers. Some call it the jewel of Flanders. Booking required: https://www.sintbaafskathedraal.be/en/history/the-ghent-altarpiece/
  • There are many great museums in Ghent. Are favorites include: The Industry Museum, MSK, SMAK and the Dr. Guislain Museum. Consider getting a CityCard which gives discounts to many museums and includes public transport.
  • Restaurants
    Some of our favorites:
    • Knees to chin (quick rice wraps streetfood)
    • Friet ketel (good frites)
    • TarTar Friets (closeby to historic center)
    • Golden gai (Ramen and good cocktails)
    • Wan and only (Classis Belgian food)
    • Bakker klaas (best bread in Gent)
    • Eat love pizza (easy pizza)
    • Vrijmoed (Michelen starred)
  • Open Air Markets
    •   Organic farmers market, Heilig Hart plein, Wednesday 11-13h
    •   Book market, Ajuinlei, Sunday morning
    •   Antique, Sint-Jacobs, Sunday morning
    •   Flower market Kouter Square, Sunday morning
  • Chocolate
If you are in Ghent, for chocolate you must go to Yuzu. In Brussels, Pierre Marcolini.
  • A historic guided tour in open-air boats. Highly recommended. Our favorite providers are these folks: https://debootjesvangent.be/
  • Sauna
Book a spa day at the beautiful Art Deco Aqua Azul: https://aqua-azul.be/
  • One of the best tourist activities. You can see all of Ghent from the top and get a look at the inside workings of the clock: https://visit.gent.be/en/see-do/ghent-belfry-world-heritage

What should I wear?
For those of you wondering what to wear on this special day, the keywords are fun, comfort, and casual.

Gent weather in the early summer/late springtime is a fickle mistress. You can expect moderate temperatures and (as always) the possibility of rain.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Please wear something you can walk, bike, and dance in as all are potential activities.
  • An umbrella or light raincoat is never a bad idea.
  • The reception venue is voluminous and while the main room will be climate-controlled, the rest of the building can be quite drafty, even on warm days. Bring layers for the evening.
  • If you plan on dancing into the night beyond the official celebration hours (we may end up at a nearby bar) and are moving around by bike, bring your bike lights!
